*American Routes – Five Years After the Storm
It has been five years since Hurricane Katrina and the failure of the Federal levee system in New Orleans, and we speak with local activists, musicians and residents to gauge the progress of recovery in the city and region. Rebirth Brass Band’s Derrick Tabb talks about his after-school program “The Roots of Music;” we visit the Musician’s Village in the 9th Ward to meet drummer Smokey Johnson; then head out into the bayous with blues guitarist Tab Benoit to talk about his work to save the wetlands. Also, conversation with Eric Overmyer and Lolis Eric Elie from HBO’s “Treme,” and commentary from New Orleanian James Carville on the importance of the culture of the city.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Dollars And Cents, Part 2
Our walk on the wild financial side of BluegrassLand continues as we turn our attention from coins to the almighty dollar. From top dollars to bottom dollars, David Parmley, the Dappled Grays, the Lonesome River Band and Charlie Sizemore will have the subject covered.

Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #97
A tribute to the late Kentucky fiddler Art Stamper includes four of his cuts spanning 1961 to 1990, with the Stanley Brothers, Bill Clifton, Larry Sparks, and a solo project. There’s interesting trivia (during a 26-year hiatus in his bluegrass career, Stamper was a successful Louisville hairdresser; Fincastle, VA, site of the first multi-day bluegrass festival, was once capital of the entire Kentucky and Ohio territories) and controversy (about nasal singing, poor grammar, and the Osborne Brothers’ bluegrass/hip-hop version of “Rocky Top” — which made some listeners madder than hornets). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.

Bluegrass Review – #1036
It’s the last broadcast of this Summer with guests Adam Granger and Lyle Lofgren. This time, we cover a type of song that is slowly rising in prominence, the cover song. A cover song is one that has been a hit in another idiom. Why songs from other idioms enter bluegrass is a question we attempt to answer. On the Gem of Bluegrass, we study the importance of the Beatles to bluegrass. The Beatles was an iconic pop group a generation ago. Musical previews of the 17th Annual Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, which showcases emerging and non-touring California bands. Included: traditional bluegrass from the David Thom Band, Dark Hollow, and Highway One; old time music by The Wronglers and Luke Abbott; progressive bluegrass from 49 Special, Savannah Blue, and Houston Jones; the party grass of Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys and Sidesaddle & Co.; and, yes, more.

*etown – Loudon Wainwright III & Bettye LaVette
This week we bring you a rebroadcast of a fantastic eTown road show taped in Colorado Springs. Our old friend, ultimate singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III, returns to eTown. Loudon shares a set of both hilarious and touching songs, as only he can do, with Nick & Helen Forster and the eTones backing him up here and there. Then, it’s legendary soul singer Bettye LaVette in her return to the eTown stage. A force to be reckoned with, Bettye sings, teases and taunts the audience into tapping their feet to her dynamic set of tunes, all backed up in top-notch style by the eTones.

In Mike Kear’s Music from Foggy Hollow this week he’s featuring a new CD from a young fella who’s already a legend in bluegrass. Darrell Webb has a new band and a new CD called Bloodline and Mike’s playing some of it for you in this show. And this week, for the first time, Mitch Harrell, some old music he just found from the Forbes Family and music from a couple of the best Australian acoustic musicians, Ian Simpson and John Kane. Also Mike hasn’t forgotten his regular segment from Erio Meili in Brazil and he looks back 5 years to see what was in the show back then. There’s lots lots more of the best new bluegrass around too. It’s only for fun, so don’t miss it!

As well, we’ve included several tunes from some of the different bands and groups John made with music over the many years of his career. John’s love for the music and fun he had with it shines through with many of his recordings.

*American Routes – Bustin’ Loose: Go-Go and Zydeco with Chuck Brown and Jeffrey Broussard
Come meet us at the club as we jump into two distinct American musics: go-go and zydeco. From the nation’s capital, we’ll visit with the “Godfather of Go-Go,” funk and jazz guitarist Chuck Brown, who’ll explain the finer points of jamming and showing the audience some love. Then we’re back in Louisiana getting down to the Creole sounds of zydeco with the Creole cowboy Jeffrey Broussard, whose fiddle and accordion playing brings the music back its source. The son of the late accordion legend Delton Broussard, Jeffery knows the deep roots of d’vrais zarico (real zydeco), but also the appeal of tradition in a modern sound.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Dollars And Cents, Part 1
We’ll be embarking on the first of an ambitious two part excursion into the many peculiarities and vagaries of the high lonesome monetary system which has left financial experts scratching their heads and hollering for more Xanax. Lynn Morris, Lost Highway, David Davis, Chris Stuart, The Freight Hoppers and Ricky Skaggs will giving us the scoop on coinage—this penny pinching, nickel plugged, dime dropping, no quarter given or asked edition of The Breakdown.

Bluegrass Review – #1035
Guests Adam Granger and Lyle Lofgren, with host Phil Nusbaum, give their views on the evolution of bluegrass. The Gem of Bluegrass gives special attention to evolution of the progressive edge of bluegrass music. What else? Bluegrass songs sing the poverty blues, and we slip in a little summer fluff. (It meets most folks’ weekly minimum requirement.) The playlist is located at www.bluegrassreview.com. Join the Bluegrass Review discussion on Facebook.
Bluegrass Signal – Happy Birthday, Dave Evans!
Originally broadcast on Dave Evans’s 60th birthday, this too-brief tribute features his music from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, but also includes a couple recent songs and a couple when he was in Larry Sparks’ band. County Sales’ Dave Freeman, in several reviews, summarizes the birthday celebrant: “Dave Evans’ recordings have been consistently good, showcasing a vocal talent that is one of the most distinctive and soulful in bluegrass music. He is no slouch as a banjo player, but his voice is one of the treasures of modern day bluegrass. If any one artist captures the essence of bluegrass as it used to be, it could be Dave Evans. Steeped in tradition, but highly individualistic, Evans has always gone his own way, and, in the process, has left us some memorable music.”

A Jim & Jesse suite starts things off, a Gold Rush suite keeps them going and, even though it’s August, we follow little footprints in the snow. Obsolete friends this week include Hank Snow, Bill Monroe, Barbecue Bob, John Lee Hooker, the Blue Sky Boys, Cliff Carlisle, Johnnie & Jack, and lots more. To a man, they’re all Obsolete, but they mean well.

Editor’s Picks – The Desert Rose Band
Our pick of the week is the Desert Rose band. They were in town for a reunion concert at the Birchmere on August 7th and Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen and John Jorgensen visited with Katy Daley and Lee Michael Demsey and performed live in our Washington, DC studios.

*etown – Lila Downs & Gregory Alan Isakov
This week’s show, when originally broadcast in 2008, happens to be the eTown debut of two talented musical guests. First, multi-cultural singer-songwriter Lila Downs joins us along with her amazing band. Lila was raised in the Mixtec region of Oaxaca, Mexico and in Minnesota, and her music reflects her diverse roots. We also welcome emerging artist Gregory Alan Isakov, a fantastic singer and songwriter who shares some of his original tunes.

New Found Road has contributed remarkably to our enjoyment for several years since forming as a bluegrass gospel band in July of 2001. Tim Shelton remains as an original member of the band and we’ll enjoy several of the band’s songs on this edition. The group sings “Rock of Ages” as part of our old hymns portion of the program at the start of the third hour.

Gosh, it goes by fast! This week’s show features music to be heard in the latter part of summer, with CD releases, festivals and special events. This week we have a strong international flavor to the show, with bands and artists from Europe, USA, Canada and Toronto (Editor’s note: Is this a Canadian inside joke?).

*American Routes – Earth & Blood: James Blood Ulmer & Tracy Nelson
Elemental blues, jazz and country from two performers with deep roots and cosmic connections. In the ’60s, young Tracy Nelson left the midwest for psychedelic San Francisco to front the R&B rock band Mother Earth. Now deep in the Tennessee hills, she’s looking back to country sounds. From South Carolina to deep space, guitarist James “Blood” Ulmer takes us on his journey from childhood gospel to free-form harmolodic jazz with Ornette Coleman. Blood now brings it all to bear on a brutal, personal version of the blues.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Darin & Brooke Aldridge Live
Their harmonies are lush and rich; their delivery is full of passion and the truth; they evoke memories of the great brother acts of the 50’s; and they sweep audiences off their feet wherever they showcase their prodigious musical wares. Darin & Brooke Aldridge will be demonstrating just how tight close harmonies can be in a special live appearance. We’ll also be checking out what’s new in the bins as we sample tunes from Audie Blaylock and Redline, the Kruger Brothers, Nu-Blu, Wildfire and Cadillac Sky.

Bluegrass Review – #1033
After sampling a piece of new bluegrass, we play a couple of songs with nearly the same themes and very nearly the same titles. The songs were recorded over a half century apart, and listening to them now offers a good indication of some ways bluegrass has changed. Then, on our Gem of Bluegrass, Lyle Lofgren Adam Granger and host Phil Nusbaum speculate on the earliest influences on Bill Monroe’s bluegrass. Later in the show, we present Monroe’s mature musical style. When we asked Lyle Lovett why he didn’t stick with journalism, he said, “It’s hard to sing the newspaper.” From blues to country to Texas swing, Lyle and his large band can tell some good stories, and they’re not all about penguins. We’ll hear all about it (and more) when we sit down in conversation with Lyle. Howard Tate is a master of soulful singing, bringing his bluesy touch and deep meaning to such classics as “Get it While You Can” and “Ain’t Nobody Home.” We’ll talk about his life in Philadelphia’s gospel and soul scenes, and his path back to the stage today.

From shouters to chanteuses, R&B melisma to the high lonesome sound of bluegrass, this week we bring you some of the biggest voices on the American soundscape. Neo-retro vocalist k.d. lang comes by to talk about her loves and influences from 50’s country to smoky lounge music. New Orleans singer Topsy Chapman tells us how a stint as a singing waitress on Bourbon Street and growing up with 15 siblings led her to an international career as a song stylist.

Then we talk about the players influencing one of Monroe’s mandolin styles, and how Monroe influenced others. Plus, we have some new things to play and we really have a lot of fun listening to the “outside” version of “Gonna lay Down My Old Guitar” by Bryan Sutton and Chris Thile. And a refreshing visit to a local New Orleans favorite, Hansen’s Sno-Bliz, servin’ up the best sno-cones you’ve ever tasted. Finally, we remember the late Secretary of the Interior and noted conservationist Stewart Udall as Routes digs into the archives for a raft run on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Lyle Lofgren and Adam Granger are back, and with host Phil Nusbaum the three talk about wrecks again. This time, on the Gem of Bluegrass, the trio offers an explanation of why there have never been many American songs written about shipwrecks. Later in the broadcast the three play some American songs where shipwrecks are mentioned, but the wrecks are not the main points of the songs, but vehicles to express some other theme. Though we knew already, Hour Two starts with a medley warning us about the evils of strong drink, lingers a bit with Carl Butler and the Webster Brothers, and finishes with superior gospel songs from Skip James and the Sauceman Brothers (with Carl Butler again, and Joe Stuart too).

It’s been ten years since she was last with us, so this is a very special show indeed. Hosts Nick & Helen Forster also welcome the Horse Flies for their first-ever eTown appearance, bringing their mesmerizing blend of rock, roots, folk, bluegrass and ethnic grooves.

In Mike Kear’s Music from Foggy Hollow this week he’s featuring a “Guilty”, a CD by a terrific new band called Jett’s Creek. Mike will look at the band’s background and play some of the songs. Also this week, great new music from Singer songwriter Nora Jane Struthers, Lonesome Meadow, Ronnie King, The High Desert Band from Idaho, Volume Five, and young up-and-coming songwriter Thomas Porter. Also there’s the regular Portuguese segment from Erio Meili in Brazil and Mike looks back 5 years to see what was in the show back then, and lots lots more. It’s only for fun, so you’d be a ring-tailed bandicoot if you missed it!

Old Time Jam – #126 (New Tunes)
There are many new tunes composed since the old-time revival started back in the 1960s, and which have been accepted into the jam session repertoire. This is a program consisting entirely of these tunes, which with their authors identified. See what you think of them as we “Move the Tradition Forward.” Among the pieces, you may recognize such favorites as “Squirrel Heads and Gravy,” “Snake River Reel,” and “Boys, them Buzzards Are Flying.” The musicians will include Bruce Molsky, Adam Hurt, the Martin Family, the Boiled Buzzards, Matt Brown, “Chirps” Smith and the Piney Creek Weaselsw, to name only a few. In many cases, we’ll have the tunes being played by the people who wrote them.

For two weeks each Summer, people come together on the 1850’s Carroll County Farm Museum to learn and be entertained. We’ll hear a recording from July 10th, 2010, with Kathy Mattea.
*American Routes – July 4th with Ponderosa Stomp, Del McCoury Band & Preservation Hall Jazz Band
This Fourth of July, American Routes celebrates our nation’s birthday with two live concerts of all-American music. We’ll stop by the Ponderosa Stomp, dedicated to the “unsung heroes of rock n’ roll” for a good dose of rockabilly, soul, country and R&B classics, done by the originators themselves. Then it’s down the street to Preservation Hall, where bluegrass masters the Del McCoury Band mix it up with the Crescent City’s own purveyors of traditional jazz, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. So fire up the grill, pull out your lawn chair and turn up the radio for American Routes.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Larry Sparks/King Wilkie/Cadillac Sky Live
We’ll be featuring live segments from the Breakdown’s vaults. Larry Sparks will lend some insight into his landmark Rebel CD, 40, which celebrates his 4 decades in the Bluegrass biz; King Wilkie will be ganging around the microphones presenting their hard-driving, high, blue and lonesome wares; and Cadillac Sky will follow with their patented brand of new grass with songs about trains, drinking and … “cash crops.”

Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #90
This week’s show profiles Norman Blake with three early recordings from the 50s and 60s, and three from his more recent work. Other highlights include songs about demon trains, banjo great Mike Lilly, female pioneer Rose Maddox, and live cuts from Flatt and Scruggs (with Benny Martin and Curly Seckler) and Bill Monroe (with Del McCoury and Bill Keith). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.

Bluegrass Review
We start out with new bluegrass by Brand New Strings, and find that the group’s style comes in part from Del McCoury’s. And why not? Del has been a bluegrass standard bearer for a couple of decades. The Gem of Bluegrass deals with high singing and how it marks passionate emotions in bluegrass music. In part II of the show, our focus stays on singing, as we play fancy singing, especially song endings, inspired by the Osborne Bros. We wind up with some bluegrass from Tin Pan Alley sources.
Bluegrass Signal – Up A Creek
This week, Bluegrass Signal’s Peter Thompson is up a creek. There are several renditions of creek-ish tunes by Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, Clarence White, Watson/Blake/Rice, and The Roadoilers, plus songs from creek-ish bands based in NorCal (Adobe Creek, Bean Creek, Mossy Creek) and elsewhere (Nickle Creek, Polecat Creek, Spring Creek). Let’s go up whatever creek and have a little fun.

*The Dick Spottswood Show
Don’t miss this one! Besides being the birthday of our nation, It’s the silver anniversary of the Obsolete Music Hour, which first aired July 6, 1985, and the 43d anniversary of July 3, 1967, when Lyndon Johnson was still President, and the first Bluegrass Unlimited show, with Gary Henderson and me, aired on WAMU. Along with Independence Day anthems, we’ll hear excerpts from a 1969 show featuring the Stonemans, and one from 1968 with banjo giant Bill Emerson.

Very special thanks to Bluegras Country’s Katy Daley, who’s promoted the occasion on the Bluegrass Blog. She makes us all look good!

*etown – Vienna Teng (featuring Alex Wong) and Dan Hicks & The Hot Licks
Hosts Nick & Helen Forster welcome back guitarist and songwriter Dan Hicks. And of course he brings those great back up singers, The Hot Licks. His eclectic style and counter-culture appeal, driven by sharp-tongued and dry-witted lyrics, has twice landed him on the cover of Rolling Stone! Also with us in this encore airing is pianist and singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. She’s a Stanford computer science grad and software engineer whose career took a sharp turn several years ago, when she ditched that world to pursue her musical passions. She has since released two critically acclaimed independent albums which landed her on the Billboard album charts and Amazon’s bestseller list.

*American Routes – Poets of Twang: Buddy Miller and John Doe
What happens when two guys from the East Coast head West with guitars? They become country singers, naturally. But the path there wasn’t so obvious. Buddy Miller has been everywhere: Austin, Los Angeles, New York and now Nashville. We’ll talk about his musical journey from outlaw to alt-country and how he’s carving out a new “old” style in the Music City. Then we’ll visit with Los Angeles poet and punk rocker John Doe of the band X, who has found inspiration in the Countrypolitan sounds of the 1960s.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Barry Scott & Second Wind
He honed his craft playing bass and singing soaring vocals with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver for almost 10 years. He now is at the helm of his own powerful, dynamic and trend-setting band. He writes uplifting songs and sings them with authority and panache. The ex-heartthrob of Bluegrass, Barry Scott and Second Wind, will be picking and singing ‘em live.

Earlier this year, we aired part one of a two-part interview chronicling the storied career of Washington, D.C., bluegrass great Dudley Connell. The first part was wildly popular and covered Dudley’s involvement with The Johnson Mountain Boys.

Sunday, June 27 at 3pm ET we’ll rebroadcast the second part of this interview on Bluegrass Master Class, featuring Dudley’s years with The Seldom Scene.
