And learn about New Orleans own relation to the river with Tulane professor Richard Campanella. Plus river tales from Captain Doc Hawley, Aaron Neville and Al Green.

You know how bluegrass fans comment on all the sad songs in bluegrass, particularly those with happy melodies. The show opens with sad songs, happy-sounding and otherwise. On the Gem of Bluegrass, we investigate some complex aspects of supposedly “simple” bluegrass and old time music. Later, we talk to Graham Sharp of the Steep Canyon Rangers about his songwriting for the group. This week on American Routes, we’re roaming the highways, byways and crossroads of the Magnolia State, looking for all kinds of blues. We sit down with noted blues scholar Bill Ferris to talk about his lifelong obsession with the music of his home state, and visit with Delta piano blues chanteuse Eden Brent to learn about her music mentor Boogaloo Ames. We set out north for Holly Springs and some Hill Country family jams. Then we head towards home to hang out at Teddy’s Juke Joint, and catch up with the master of the gut-bucket blues, Little Freddie King.

Our program begins with current wave bluegrass. Then on our Gem of Bluegrass, we wonder if the bluegrass paradigm is changing. It certainly could be: Bluegrass is in a constant state of evolution, and at this time, there are many new people getting interested in bluegrass. Later, it is an episode of “Songs from Life,” as bluegrass artists tell of the connection between the songs they write and sing, and lived experience. In Memory Of Wade Mainer (rebroadcast)
Originally broadcast on the 100th(!) birthday of Wade Mainer, who was born near Asheville, NC, on April 21, 1907, this week’s “Bluegrass Signal” provides a musical overview of and memorial tribute to the musician who’s been called the “Grandfather Of Bluegrass.” His music provides a vital transitional link between the old-time stringbands of the 1920s and the emerging bluegrass style of the 1930s and ‘40s, and his repertoire is the basis for numerous now-standard bluegrass songs. This overview of his music includes the earliest recordings in 1935 with brother J.E. Mainer, a 1941 radio show with Wade’s Sons Of the Mountaineers band, and more recent sessions with his wife Julia (aka Hillbilly Lilly), to whom he was married for over 70 years.

#1216
Exciting new bluegrass opens this week’s broadcast. After that we investigate a major way bluegrass evolves: by recontexting music; you might say, combining genres. Then we say or last goodbyes to Earl Scruggs, and play some recent bluegrass about kids: Unlike the old bluegrass focusing on kids, these new songs are hopeful. I couldn’t tell if it was a banjo or electric guitar or if it was lightning bolts from heaven.” (John Hartford)

The Jayhawks / Justin Townes Earle
eTown hits the road and heads north to the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins, Colorado. Musical guests include The Jayhawks: After a lengthy hiatus, the original members of the band reunited last year behind a long awaited, chart topping #1 album. They’ll share songs showcasing their original alternative country rock sound. Justin Townes Earle (son of Steve Earle) also visits eTown. This Nashville-born musician has won over critics and music lovers alike; among other acknowledgments, he was chosen as the “Best New and Emerging Artist” at the 2009 Americana Music Awards.

Giants of Jazz: Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane
For this special American Routes program, we follow the lives of two giants of jazz: Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. From their humble North Carolina beginnings to their triumphs on the world stage, we’ll trace their individual and inspired paths to creativity. And we’ll visit with the musicians who played with the greats, including McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders, and the next generation, TS Monk and Ravi Coltrane.

Clouds, Part 2
“I am the daughter of Earth and Water, and the nursling of the Sky; I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores, I change, but I cannot die.” The words are [Percy Bysshe] Shelley’s and they do justice to the grandeur and majesty of our subject matter. Tony Rice, Scott Vestal, Paul Williams and Doyle Lawson will be laying to rest, once and for all, the truth of the old adage that every cloud has a silver lining.

1952 Releases, part 2 (rebroadcast)
Many of the standards that are the foundation of bluegrass emerged in the music’s first significant decade, 1946-56. I thought it’d be interesting to pick one of those years, and have a listen to some of the songs released in, say, 1952. Last week: Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Reno & Smiley, Jim & Jesse, Pee Wee Lambert & Curley Parker, Jim Eanes, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. This week: The Osborne Brothers (but not together), Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. Mac Wiseman, Sauceman Brothers, Larry Richardson & Happy Smith, Betty Harper, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. I’d live them times again.

For the week of April 1, Obsolete Music sheds its normal dignity and reserve in favor of levity and licentiousness. Don Reno, Buzz Busby, Grandpa Jones, Onie Wheeler and even the Carter Family will let down their hair for your amusement. But seriously, folks, The Country Gentlemen, Sons of the Pioneers, Mac Wiseman, Bill Monroe and Marty Robbins promise to be more circumspect. No foolin’.

1952 Releases, part 1
Many of the standards that are the foundation of bluegrass emerged in the music’s first significant decade, 1946-56. This week, host Peter Thompson thought it’d be interesting to pick one of those years, and have a listen to some of the songs released in, say, 1952. This week: Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Reno & Smiley, Jim & Jesse, Pee Wee Lambert & Curley Parker, Jim Eanes, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. Next week: The Osborne Brothers (but not together), Jimmy Martin, Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. Mac Wiseman, Sauceman Brothers, Larry Richardson & Happy Smith, Betty Harper, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer.

An early Monroe mandolin tune and its descendants, 1920s music from a 2012 blues calendar and a hard times medley from the 1930s proves once more that what goes around comes around. Add multiple selections by Bob Wills, Buzz Busby, the Kentucky fiddler Blind Ed Haley and the Stanley Brothers and you get two full hours of outdated, antiquated, Obsolete Music.
