Whippoorwills
Their haunting and ethereal cry is one of the most thrilling sounds in all of BluegrassLand. Legend says they can sense impending death and catch souls as they flee. They’re an auditory symbol of rural America and they appear in some of the genre’s greatest songs. With the help of Bill Monroe, David Davis, Pine Mountain Railroad and Billy Boone Smith, we’ll be listening to the late night cry of the whippoorwill.

*American Routes – Sat. 4 a.m. & 8 p.m.
Downhome in the Big City: Andy Statman & Norah Jones
We’ll spend time with two eclectic NYC-based musicians who mix up country with jazz and other traditions. Multi-instrumentalist Andy Statman comes from a family steeped in Jewish musical traditions, but got the bluegrass bug playing with David Grisman and Tony Trischka. We’ll talk about his explorations of bluegrass, klezmer, free jazz and now duets with tea kettles. Then singer and pianist Norah Jones, known for her own personal stamp on jazz, shares the country side of life in her recent work with The Little Willies. Plus lots of “citified” country songs and downhome urban tunes.

Bluegrass Breakdown – Sun. 2 a.m., Mon. 10 p.m., Wed. 5 a.m.
“June—September, 1971″
We’ll be headin’ back to the bluegrassically riveting summer of 1971 when, among other things: Alison Maria Krauss is born in Decatur, Illinois on July 23rd; Bill Monroe & Lester Flatt end their long feud and reunite on stage at Beanblossom; Earl Snead opens the Bluegrass Inn in Nashville; and J.D. Crowe, Kenny Baker, Cliff Waldron, the Country Gentlemen and Ralph Stanley churn out some superlative ‘grass.

Bluegrass Gospel USA! – Tues. 8 p.m.
Featuring host Bill Miller.

Bluegrass Master Class – Sun. 3 p.m. & Fri. 4 a.m.
Banks of the Ohio #123
We visit 1958 this week in the third half hour, including Jimmy Martin live, four great Starday cuts, and Wayne Raney’s WCKY broadcast of the first bluegrass record from Japan (the East Mountain Boys). There are three Vassar Clements cuts and the first all-female bluegrass band (the Buffalo Gals). Don’t miss the last half hour… unless you’re a staunch traditionalist and subject to apoplectic fits. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.

#413 (Music From Virginia)
Music from a 50-song, 2-CD set that features mostly previously-released selections from performers based along “The Crooked Road” in Virginia, a region that’s home to some of the country’s most powerful music. Included in the show are both relatively well-known bluegrass bands (Dr. Ralph & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Blue Highway, Lonesome River Band, Junior Sisk & Rambler’s Choice) and notable old time musicians (Wayne Henderson, Elizabeth LaPrelle, New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters, Mac & Jenny Trayham).

#373
Great bluegrass from the Stanley Brothers, Bill (and Charlie!) Monroe, Allen Shelton and the Country Gentlemen, sad songs about the 1946-8 housing shortage, a suite of Cajun classics and a medley of 1930s fiddle jazz. Obsolete Music is full of surprises.

Crowe Brothers / Gibson Brothers
The Louvin Brothers, The Monroe Brothers, The Stanley Brothers, and Jim and Jesse McReynolds are just some of the acts in early country and bluegrass music that helped established the tradition of the brother duet. This week we’re highlighting two groups that are continuing this proud musical tradition– The Gibson Brothers and The Crowe Brothers, both of whom were recorded live at the 2011 International Bluegrass Music Association’s World of Bluegrass Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

Lyle Lovett / Taj Mahal – Green Rocks Part 2
It’s Part Two of eTown’s special ‘Green Rocks at Red Rocks’ show. Join hosts Nick & Helen Forster for more great music and conversation, recorded live at the exquisite outdoor Red Rocks Amphitheatre. This year’s eTown’s ‘Green Rocks’ continues the recycling, zero waste zones, renewable energy use, biodiesel bus transportation, carpool incentives, and more that eTown introduced to the venue a few years back, practices that have become standard procedures there these days. Part Two brings more music from Lyle Lovett and Taj Mahal, plus an in-depth interview with Bill Ritter, looking back on his tenure as governor of Colorado and his focus on ‘green’ energy efforts.

The Indie Gramophone
Whether you’re spinning 45s, 78s, or LPs, you’ll discover gold in the vinyl this week on American Routes. We check in with the record label dedicated to resurrecting lost sounds for the digital age, Dust to Digital. For some soul sides, we hear from Gabriel Roth, founder of Daptone Records, who’s re-imaging classic soul with the band Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. We’ll also talk to the man who got the Bossa Nova on record and started the Impulse label, jazz producer Creed Taylor. Then it’s off to Ville Platte for a conversation with Cajun recordman Floyd Soileau of Swallow Records. Plus tunes to get the jukebox shaking!

Malone of Madison, WI., teacher, author and musician. We talk about his life and about country music during his life. This Saturday, Lee Michael Demsey devotes his singer/songwriter hour (1 pm ET) to the music of Kate Wolf. Kate’s lovely, quietly soulful folk music inspired many musicians and listeners alike, in the 1970′s and 80′s, before her untimely death in 1986, at the age of 44. There was a touch of Bluegrass in some of the tunes, with the support of folks like Tony Rice and the Cache Valley Drifters. Lee will play tunes written by Kate Wolf, some performed by her, and some by other top flight performers, like Emmylou Harris, Peter Rowan, Nanci Griffith, John Gorka and Utah Phillips.

Gulf Coast Blues and More: Barbara Lynn & Belton Richard
Tune in for the words and music of two storied artists of the Gulf South. First up, the Empress of Gulf Coast Soul, Barbara Lynn, of Beaumont, Texas. Ms. Lynn recalls her days as the Black Elvis, playing left-handed guitar and penning and recording her own first-person paeans of love lost. Accordion player, Belton Richard talks about bringing his mix of Cajun and country to dancehalls across the region and remembers his swamp pop days with the Musical Aces. Plus two hours of swampy blues, sultry country and more.

The Hillbenders Live
They took home the 2009 Best Bluegrass Band award at Telluride as well as the 2010 Single Microphone Championship at Silver Dollar City. They delight in pushing the genre in different directions and have a riotous, joyous sound all their own. From Springfield, Missouri, banjoist Mark Cassidy; bassist Gary Rea; guitarist Jim Rea; mandolinist Nolan Lawrence and dobroist Chad Graves—The Hillbenders—will be bending notes, genres and maybe a few hills to boot when they join us live.

Banks of the Ohio #122
A listener’s recollections of pioneer disc jockey Eddie Matherly prompt a review of Washington, D.C. area contributions to bluegrass history on this week’s Banks of the Ohio. The “Starving Out” segment presents 10 cuts from 1957, culminating with the Osborne Brothers & Red Allen’s first high-lead trio and chart hit, “Once More.” “Modern Branches” explores boundary stretching music from young bluegrass Turks in the U.S. And Europe. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.

#1203
The show opens with current wave bluegrass. Then our Gem of Bluegrass considers modernistic bluegrass takes on booze. These viewpoints are not as moralizing as some of those from the 1920s and 1930s. Then, on our Out in the Country series, we talk to Dale Thomas of West Brach, Iowa. For decades, he’s led pop and country dance bands, but after a half century of that, is rising to meet a new musical challenge: playing bluegrass dobro guitar in the Burlington Street Bluegrass Band. Suzanne Vega / Moby
eTown heads East for a show in Baltimore at the gloriously beautiful Hippodrome Theater. Joining us are two talented artists who’ve been with us before: Moby and Suzanne Vega. Since releasing his first single ‘Go’ in 1991, Moby has become a household name; so far he’s sold over 20,000,000 record copies of his music worldwide! He’s a socially/environmentally aware, soulful guy to be sure and he’s also funny as can be (don’t miss Nick’s conversation with him!) Musically, this is a special, musically pared down acoustic set for Moby. Suzanne Vega also takes the stage, with her friend and guitarist Gerry Leonard. A leading figure in the folk music revival of the 1980′s, she has continued to write great songs and has performed around the world to rave reviews.

Danielle Ate The Sandwich / Mumford & Sons
Nick & Helen Forster welcome two musical groups who are seriously turning heads. Mumford & Sons bring their unique sound all the way from London, England. The young and spirited quartet share their earnest and high energy folk-rock sound. The British foursome has only been together for a few years, but, after listening to them, it’s easy to understand why they continue to sell out venue after venue on their US tours. Also taking the eTown stage is Danielle Ate the Sandwich (that’s Danielle Anderson and her band), who has built an impressive internet fan-base in a relatively short amount of time with her great singing and quirky, hip original tunes.

Obsolete Music cures the mid-winter blues!

Also on the show, great new music from Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Laurie Lewis, Clay Hess, Kathy Kallick and Frank Wakefield. Most drinking songs were written long before the invention of motor vehicles. Knowing most pockets and handbags are heavy with car keys nowadays makes us cautious when we invite people to fill their glasses. We’ll be celebrating that most sacred and joyous day in Bluegrassland – that magical and mysterious time of the year when ancient tomes and songs are in the air, the banjos are all in tune, and people raise their voices as one. Robin & Linda Williams, New Grange, Cedar Hill, Big Country Bluegrass, Harvey Reid & Joyce Andersen, Monroe Crossing, and Dan Crary will all be along to give the season the high-lonesome, honor, dignity, and respect it deserves.
NOTE: “The Nashville Unlimited Christmas Special” will be airing in place of Bluegrass Breakdown this weekend, but you can still listen to this program here online when we have it ready.

Banks of the Ohio brings you the history of Bluegrass Christmas music. You’ll hear popular favorites and some obscurities. Surprises include: the 1927 Fiddlin’ John Carson record that inspired “Christmas Times’ a-Coming;” a 1940 black gospel arrangement of “Go Where I Send Thee;” the true story of how the Country Gentlemen made their first Christmas record; touching holiday recitations by the Louvin Brothers and Bill Grant & Delia Bell; and some bummed-out Christmas tunes from Lonzo & Oscar, Reno & Smiley, Jimmy Martin, Marty Stuart, Ronnie Bowman, and Tim O’Brien. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
