*American Routes – Singing and Swinging the Election 2008
American Routes gets out the vote with music by, for and of the people. Lend your ears to the democratic process as we bring you music to get you to the polls, from protest songs to patriotic anthems. Dr. John shares his views on the politics of music and the state of the nation while Tennessee Senator and piano man Lamar Alexander tells tales of the campaign trail. Plus, Virginia banjo legend Ralph Stanley reveals a surprising endorsement and presidential candidate El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, stops by to ask for our vote.
Banks of the Ohio (a rebroadcast)
Visit 1969 in the “Starving Out” segment. That’s the year that Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs split; John Duffey left the Country Gentlemen; Jim & Jesse and the Osborne Brothers balanced country and bluegrass careers; and the Bluegrass Alliance, Sam Bush, Joe Isaacs, and the Goins Brothers made their first albums. Other highlights include Curly Seckler and the Murphy Brothers on live radio from 1950, a Hazel Dickens/Tracy Schwarz duet to die for, and some songs that will make you ask “what was that?”. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Breakdown – John Reischman & The Jaybirds Live
They’re hard-driving, irrepressible and innovative—a quintet that incorporates the best elements of bluegrass and old-time into a killer new sound all their own. John Reischman and the Jaybirds will be swooping down out of the high lonesome skies and ganging around the microphones in continued celebration of their Stellar Jays release.
Bluegrass Review
This week’s Gem of Bluegrass focuses on the evolution of the mandolin playing of Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music. Also, we talk to Evie Ladin and Sue Sandlin of the Stairwell Sisters. Theirs is an old time group, but they do a lot of songwriting. We talk about what motivates their writing. Also, we play some strong new bluegrass. By the way, Bluegrass Review host Phil Nusbaum enjoys invites your correspondence at pnusbaum@bitstream.net. Check www.bluegrassreview.com for playlists, a link to culture11, where bluegrass people discuss bluegrass, links to Bluegrass Review supporters and occasional special offers.
Bluegrass Signal - Across the Tracks
Catching up up with a few of the many recent releases: new EuroGrass (Petr Brandejs, G2), new SEGrass (Big Country Bluegrass, Kenny & Amanda Smith, Blue Moon Rising), new old time (Eric & Suzy Thompson, Mt. Diablo String Band, Laura Boosinger & Josh Goforth), new country-flavored bluegrass (Ralph Stanley II, Ricky Skaggs, Rickey Wasson, Jeanette Williams & George Jones), and a couple previously-unissued tracks from Dr. Ralph’s clawhammer collection.
*The Dick Spottswood Show
With an election coming up, we stay carefully apolitical. There’s some not-quite almost country rock from Reno & Smiley, the Stanleys, Maddoxes, Marty Robbins and Hank Snow in the mid-50s. The Louvin Brothers and others sing a few of their songs, some country fiddlers from eastern Europe play some hot dance tunes — and Hylo Brown, Merle Haggard, Wilma Lee & Stoney, Kitty Wells and the Golden Gate Quartet take up the time thet’s left. A pretty good show, even if it is Obsolete. Vote early and often!
*etown
Grammy winners BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet have claimed their undisputed role as the most esteemed Cajun group in music, and Etown is thrilled to welcome them back for this encore broadcast. They share their rich mix of zydeco, New Orleans jazz, Tex-Mex, country, blues and more. Etown also welcomes talented newcomer, Ryan Shaw, a 26-year-old songwriter and singer extraordinaire from Georgia who, along with Nick & Helen Forster and the Etones, rock the rafters with an amazing set of positive, passionate and soulful songs. And there’s a moving E-Chievement Award story about a dedicated Vermont man, all for you in Etown this week.
