*American Routes – National Heritage Fellowship Concert and Celebration
Live from the Nation’s Capital, it’s the 2009 National Heritage Fellowship Concert. Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts recognizes citizens for their contributions to our nation’s traditional arts. We’ll hear from this year’s honorees, including zydeco’s Queen Ida, the gospel group The Birmingham Sunlights and Puerto Rican cuatro genius Edwin Colon Zayas. Plus visits with an array of previous National Heritage Fellows, from B.B. King to Earl Scruggs.
Bluegrass Breakdown – September – December 1969
We heading back to the last 4 months of 1969 on this week’s Bluegrass Breakdown. Earl Scruggs plays at the 2nd Vietnam War Moratorium in Washington D.C., Bill Monroe appears on the television show “To Tell the Truth” and the Country Gentlemen, The Dillards, and Jimmy Martin makes the airwaves sing.

Banks of the Ohio #82: You’ll hear examples of how the folk era of the ‘60s (and its aftermath) impacted bluegrass. Hour Two features party music, from Bessie Smith, Bob Wills, Bill Monroe, Merle Haggard, Jim & Jesse, Howlin’ Wolf and other celebrities, to get you in the mood to celebrate the coming of 2010. When they’re done, you’ll need a designated driver.

Pianist and singer Tori Amos makes her first ever eTown appearance, featuring lovely, stripped down tunes from Tori’s new seasonal CD. Also joining us is veteran singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, back in eTown after a decade! Nick & Helen will be joining Jesse instrumentally and vocally. Hank Williams even contributes an Isaac Watts hymn from a new release to our sing along at the start of third hour so have those hymn books handy. Barry Scott will join us at the beginning of the fourth hour to talk about his Grammy nomination for his all gospel release – “In God’ Time.”
