Bluegrass Master Class
Bluegrass Master Class this week features a rebroadcast of Banks of the Ohio: The third half hour features bluegrass from 1987, including debut recordings from Blake & Rice, Emerson & Goble, a 16-year-old Alison Krauss, and Summer Wages. There’s also a great selection of musicians from southwestern Ohio (Red Allen & Frank Wakefield, Gerald Evans & Paradise, Suzanne Thomas, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers) and the Czech Republic (Druha Trava, Kreni, and Roll’s Boys). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Review
Towards the beginning of the show, we play a modern take on the end-of-relationship theme. In “Friday Once Again,” Ernie Thacker is a divorced man who looks ahead to Friday when he can see his daughter. Then, on the Gem of Bluegrass feature, a look at how bluegrass handles time and age. Later on the broadcast, we talk to fine songwriter Charlie Sizemore. On our show, he talks about the writing of country and bluegrass songwriting icon, Tom T. Hall. Bluegrass Signal– Musical Previews
This week’s Bluegrass Signal presents music by some of the performers taking part in the San Francisco Bluegrass & Old Time Festival and the Redwood Bluegrass Associates concert series. Featured are LOTS of Jimmy Martin songs — by the Kathy Kallick Band, Bluegrass Intentions, James King, Adobe Creek, Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, High Country, and Claire Lynch — plus non-Jimmy music from the first releases of Foghorn Stringband, Crooked Jades, Blue Highway, and John Reischman & the Jaybirds. In addition, there are a couple of recent live recordings of Mac Martin, plus Longview’s version of a Mac song.

In the seond hour, melodic visits to Mardi Gras in Cajun country and New Orleans, and to Carnival celebrations in 1930s Trinidad. We follow the calendar closely to prevent becoming even more Obslete.

Etown takes to the road for a taping of the show at Colorado College’s Armstrong Hall in Colorado Springs. Joining us are two first-time Etown guests, Flobots and Nada Surf’s front man, Matthew Caws. Flobots are a progressive hip-hop collective from Denver, described as “rap music’s most singular breakthrough act in years.” (Boston Herald). Singer & guitarist Matthew Caws brings us his solo versions of Nada Surf’s poppy, thinking-person’s indie-rock songs. The LA Times calls him “the decade’s foremost purveyor of power pop.” Nick & Helen Forster and the Etones back him up instrumentally and vocally, in fine style.
