*American Routes – New York II: Beat of the Boroughs
Head to New York City with American Routes as we search out the beat of the boroughs. Sit in with Seleno Clarke as he hosts a Sunday night Hammond B-3 organ jam at the Harlem American Legion Hall. Pick and grin downtown in Washington Square Park as country comes to the city for a reunion of bluegrass musicians from the 1950s and 60s. Then it’s up to the South Bronx to trace Latin music from Mambo to Hip-Hop. Plus music from and about the city from John Coltrane, Bob Dylan and other musicians that called New York home.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Hanging Around
We’ll be examining the true differences between hanging together and hanging separately. Blue Moon Rising, Ernie Thacker, Flatt & Scruggs, Honi Deaton and Lou Reid will be giving us the lowdown on hanging around, hanging tight, hanging heads and hanging trees.

Bluegrass Review
Today our show opens up with new bluegrass by the Dixie Bee Liners. All the songs from their recent CD, called Susanville, are about trucking. On our gem of bluegrass, we demonstrate a bit of bluegrass evolution in the characters and settings for songs in songs where people are doing wrong. Later, we have a conversation with ground breaking banjoist Tony Trischka about one method of composition,. Finally, we present an update on the well-worn tune, Jerusalem Ridge. Bluegrass Signal – 1952 Releases, part 2
Many of the standards that are the foundation of bluegrass emerged in the music’s first significant decade, 1946-56. I thought it’d be interesting to pick one of those years, and have a listen to some of the songs released in, say, 1952. Last week: Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Reno & Smiley, Jim & Jesse, Pee Wee Lambert & Curley Parker, Jim Eanes, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. This week: The Osborne Brothers (but not together), Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. Mac Wiseman, Sauceman Brothers, Larry Richardson & Happy Smith, Betty Harper, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. I’d live them times again.
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Grandpa Jones, John Lee Hooker and Jimmie Rodgers help us observe Ground Hog Day. There are multiple banjos from the Osbornes, the Philippines, and the Dixieland Jug Blowers, and sorrowful blues from Hank Williams, Big Joe Turner and Tampa Red. In the second hour, 1930s Tin Pan Alley hits are resurrected by Mac Wiseman, Johnnie and Jack, Merle Haggard and Bob Wills, and we explore the arcane secrets and mysterious powers of conjure queens Marie Laveau and Aunt Caroline Dye.
*etown – Imogen Heap and Gregory Alan Isakov
This week, talented British singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and producer Imogen Heap makes her inaugural eTown visit. This two time Grammy nominee shares her most-innovative songs with arrangements mixing both electronic and traditional instrumentation. In her interview with host Nick Forster, she gives the audience a sonic tour of some of these unique instruments and sounds. Also joining us is Gregory Alan Isakov who makes his return to the eTown stage. This Boulder based singer-songwriter has built a large national following. He’s winning accolades from all around-like this one: “Hands down one of the best new songwriters on the scene.” (Amy Ray, Indigo Girls).
