*American Routes – Hank Williams
American Routes travels the Lost Highway in memory of Hank Williams, who died in the back seat of his Cadillac en route to a New Year’s Day concert. Bluegrass Breakdown – Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver Live
He began his career playing with Jimmy Martin and J.D. Crowe. Between 1971 and 1979, he was an irrepressible mandolin wielding force with the Country Gentlemen. Wanting to find his “own” sound, he formed his own band, which he has fearlessly and groundbreakingly led for the past 27 years. It’s one of the most highly decorated groups in the genre, affectionately known as the farm team of bluegrass, and a band by which all others are judged. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver will be ganging around the microphones live.
Bluegrass Review
We open with recent bluegrass, including nostalgia songs about the family farm created by Gold Heart and the Gibson Brothers. On our Gem of Bluegrass, we consider different approaches to doubling instruments in bluegrass. Later, we continue our “Out in the Country” series, where we shine lights on bluegrass-related players doing great things in local areas. This week, we focus on Lon Hendricks, bluegrass mandolinist who also leads a mandolin orchestra. Then we finish up with a couple of Merle Haggard songs done by bluegrass bands.
