Bluegrass Breakdown – Audie Blaylock & Redline
He got his baptism by fire playing with Jimmy Martin as a teenager; he honed his craft with Rhonda Vincent & the Rage; and now fronts one of the fieriest traditional bands in the genre. Audie Blaylock and Redline—Jason Johnson on the mandolin, Patrick McAvinue on the fiddle, Evan Ward on the banjo, Matt Wallace on the bass, and vocalist supremo Audie Blaylock himself on the guitar—will be will be ganging around the microphones, celebrating the release of their self-titled Rural Rhythm debut. We’ll also be partying down at the new Bluegrass CD bins, dancing and gyrating to new tunes from Wayne Taylor and Appaloosa, Bobby Osborne & Rocky Top X-Press and Jamie Dailey & Darrin Vincent.
Bluegrass Master Class
A rebroadcast of Banks of the Ohio with Fred Bartenstein. We’ll explore roots of bluegrass recorded in Charlotte, NC in the mid-’30s (Arthur Smith Trio, Blue Sky Boys, Carlisle Brothers, Mainers’ Mountaineers, Monroe Brothers); branches of bluegrass spreading to the deep south, California, and Japan; and musical styles related to bluegrass in Brazil and Ireland. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
Bluegrass Review
We open with a set of recent releases including a new banjo tune by Infamous Stringdusters’ banjoist, Chris Pandolfi, and a reissue by Mac Wiseman. Then our Gem of Bluegrass feature considers the standard bluegrass instrumental lineup. Later, we talk to banjoist Jayme Stone. He has recorded with Mansa Sissoko, kora player from Mali. The kora is the instrument which preceded the banjo. We listen to a living room session by the two players. Show host Phil Nusbaum enjoys interaction with listeners. Contact him at pnusbaum@bitstream.net.
Bluegrass Signal – Going Back To Old Kentucky, Part 3

More from Kentucky sons Tim Flannery, James Reams, Dwight McCall, Banjo Bill Cornett, Larry Cordle, and Ricky Skaggs, plus songs of old KY by everyone from Rhonda Vincent and Larry Sparks to Mountain Heart and Michelle Nixon to the Bluegrass Cardinals and Virginia Squires. And others.
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Multiple appearances this week by Cowboy Copas, Blind Blake, Rose Maddox, the Carter and Cooper Families, Bob Wills, Charlie Monroe, and Merle Travis–they’re all too good to hear just once! Merle’s first record commemorates the downfall of an infamous Italian dictator in 1943, and Wilma Lee Cooper’s “Ain’t Gonna Work Tomorrow” departs significantly from the Carter Family model. In the second hour, Grandpa Jones joins Messrs. Travis, Blake, the Stanley Brothers and the Cedar Creek Sheik in a medley of hard times songs, with hopes that our currrent hard times will soon be Obsolete.

Old Time Jam
The big festival at Clifftop is coming up again in July, so we’re recalling some of the musicians who won or placed in the contests there. In most cases these aren’t the exact tunes they played in the contest, but their recordings give an idea of how good they really are. I’ll tell you how to view the actual contest performances. See you all at Clifftop in July.

LIVE Stained Glass Bluegrass hosted by Bob Webster

We’ll also hear some new songs by the IIIrd Tyme Out, Dailey & Vincent, and Rhonda Vincent.
