*American Routes – Father’s Day

Bluegrass Breakdown – Well, Well, Well
We’ll be exploring one of the most often encountered things in BluegrassLand—something that’s been at the center of all civilizations since prehistoric times. Half the Bible seemingly concerns events occurring at or near these places. Proverbs 5: 15-17 states that to own one of these things is to “possess the surrounding country.” Folks have been casting wishes on them, seeking healing and finding peace from them; and writing songs about them for centuries. With the help of the Stevens Sisters, John Reischman & the Jay Birds, Doc & Merle Watson, Rhonda Vincent and the Lewis Family, we’ll be seeking water from the well—both literally and figuratively—as we check out deep wells, poison wells, wishing wells and holy wells.
Bluegrass Master Class
A rebroadcast of Banks of the Ohio #72 with Fred Bartenstein. This show features a number of songs associated with the Carter Family, Bill and Charlie Monroe, and Ira and Charlie Louvin. Surprises include Norman Blake and the Dixieland Drifters’ fusion of bluegrass and rockabilly on Sun Records (1957), Skeeter Davis’ convincing “I Won’t Be Hanging ‘Round” (1968), and a Romanian Gypsy tune which echoes Nickel Creek’s performance of Tim O’Brien’s “Land’s End” (2000). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
Bluegrass Review
Three bluegrass divas have current CDs: Rhonda Vincent, Alecia Nugent and Dale Ann Bradley, and selections from each diva open the show. Our Gem of Bluegrass segment focuses on how bluegrass players imitate each other, and how imitation fosters bluegrass evolution. In the second half of the show, we investigate bluegrass evolution be comparing versions of bluegrass songs. Show host Phil Nusbaum enjoys interaction with listeners. This birthday celebration includes music by a few of the many musicians discovered and/or produced by Ken, as well as other Rounder artists. There are selections from Rounder 0001 and 0044, the first recordings of Alison Krauss and the Bluegrass Album Band, and seminal sides from Hazel & Alice, Ted Lundy & Bob Paisley, Joe Val, Kentucky Colonels, Johnson Mt. Boys, Lynn Morris, James King, Dry Branch Fire Squad, Rhonda Vincent, and others. Happy Birthday (and thanks a lot!), Ken Irwin.

In this exciting encore broadcast, it’s DeVotchka, back for their third visit to Etown. This popular Colorado based band has a huge international following and fan base. Also joining us is the Brooklyn based band Au Revoir Simone: Erika Forster, Heather D’Angelo, and Annie Hart use vintage keyboards and drum machines to deliver their modern, electronic-based songs that resonate with an inviting, organic warmth.

Music from Foggy Hollow
Mike Kear is EXCITED this week, because in Music from Foggy Hollow from Australia he’s featuring a new CD from Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out that we’ve been waiting for since he doesn’t know when. Russell would surely be the best lead singer in bluegrass and with 5 great singers in the band- the vocals are always outstanding. And we have it all right here on this show this week. Also on the show new music from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Jeremy Garrett, Spring Creek, J W Hutchins, and historic bluegrass family the Stonemans. Erio Meili in Brazil brings us a song from Steve Spurgin, and we check out what was happening on the show five years ago.

Old Time Jam
It’s all about the weather reports this week, as our song titles move from inclement to stormy. After we get through cold, snow and rain, we start to clear off and finish with bright sunshine. A lot of vocals this time by the likes of Ginny Hawker and Kay Justice, Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin, Ann and Phil Case, Cliff Perry and Laurel Bliss, Mac and Jenny Traynham, and others, plus enough instrumentals to keep things moving right along.
