Bluegrass Signal – An Overview of the Music of Frank Wakefield
David Grisman said it best: “Frank Wakefield was the first mandolin player to transform the bluegrass energy of Bill Monroe into something new. He split the bluegrass mandolin atom. Some of us, obviously, will never be the same again.” In preparation for Frank’s return to NorCal, “Bluegrass Signal” presents an overview of his music, from the original 1957 recording of “New Camptown Races” through seminal sides with Red Allen to the brand-new (and still brilliant) “Ownself Blues.”
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Samples from a new reissue by Howdy Forrester and a few more Texas fiddle stars, twin guitar specials by Big Bill, Bob Wills, Roy Acuff, and the Beale Street Sheiks, a little Cajun music, and a bountiful assortment of bluegrass, blues, country and gospel. Days are getting a little chilly–let Obsolete Music warm you up.
*etown – Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule and Langhorne Slim
eTown welcomes two exciting ‘first-timers’ for this broadcast. Warren Haynes (of Gov’t Mule and The Allman Brothers) stops by to share some sparse, solo acoustic versions of his tunes. He’s not only one of the world’s greatest guitarists, he’s also a passionate singer, too. Then, up and coming acoustic roots rocker, Langhorne Slim digs in with his band mates to rock the house. Hosts Nick & Helen Forster present the E-Chievement Award to an inspiring hero who’s making a huge difference in the lives of those living in war-torn African countries.
