Worldly blues man and one-time farmhand Taj Mahal talks about tilling the soil as well as plowing through musical boundaries. The late oral historian and radioman Studs Terkel discusses work in America and his own labors over the decades. And New Orleans tinsmith and trumpeter Lionel Ferbos recalls balancing two careers. You’ll also hear a work-related music mix including Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Nina Simone, Roy Orbison and many more.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Special Consensus Live
They’ve been making extraordinary music for going on four decades; tastefully combining the old with new, with spotless vocals and playing as shiny as newly minted penny. Thundering forth out of Chicago, Special Consensus, led by banjoist Greg Cahill, will be picking, singing and celebrating the release of their new Pinecastle CD, Signs.

In the first hour of this week’s program, we rebroadcast Katy Daley’s interview with Doyle Lawson from 2008. In hour two, Bob Webster conducts an in-depth interview with gospel bluegrass musician Paul Williams (Jimmy Martin & The Sunny Mountain Boys, Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Paul Williams & The Victory Trio). The father and innovator of modern banjo pickin’, Earl Scruggs, and his band breeze their way into Etown for this special encore taping which was recorded at Boulder’s historic Chautauqua Auditorium. With Pete Wernick, Tim O’Brien, Nick Forster and Bryan Sutton, the musical chemistry makes this show an audience favorite.
