*American Routes – Labor Day
Lay back and take it easy while American Routes totes that barge for you with songs and stories of work on this holiday weekend. We remember Robert Young, better known as Washboard Slim, and learn how a work implement becomes a musical instrument. Plus words and music of French Louisiana from the recent documentary I Always Do My Collars First. And meet some local five o’clock heroes…the drivers and mechanics that keep the New Orleans streetcars rolling, as well as the men and women that ride them.
Banks of the Ohio (a rebroadcast)
Fascinating music, unreleased in its time, includes Bill Monroe’s “Blue Grass Stomp, Take 2” (1949) and “Ben Dewberry’s Final Run” (1951), Carl Story’s “Action Speaks Louder Than Words” (1954), Mac Wiseman’s “There’ll Be No Teardrops Tonight” with Poppa John Gordy’s Dixieland Band (1961), and Gordon Terry’s version of “Cheyenne” with Flatt & Scruggs, the Foggy Mountain Boys, and Merle Travis (1961). The third half hour features bluegrass from 1961. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Mark Newton Band Live
He’s got a one of kind voice, sings one of kind songs and has a one of a kind band: Clay Hess on guitar, Beth Lawrence on the bass, John Wheat on the banjo, Sierra Hull on the mandolin, Carl Jackson on guitar and Mark Newton himself, on guitar. The Mark Newton Band will be ganging around the microphones live, in between visits to the new bluegrass CD bins.
Bluegrass Review
Welcome to our Fall season on the Bluegrass Review! “Let’s Hear it for the Workin’ Man” is the title of this week’s Gem of Bluegrass. We also have some fun with the Del McCoury repertoire. Del is considered as a post-Bill Monroe source of traditional bluegrass, but on occasion he strays from the Monroe-based style to produce some very entertaining songs. We also present some entertaining new bluegrass on today’s show.
Bluegrass Signal- Who’s Going To Town, part 2
Yes, the boys (and girls) are back in town, as we continue the theme begun last week: bluegrass “town” songs. There are a couple of Tom T. Hall songs (done by Charlie Sizemore and Bluegrass Brothers) and a couple of Kathy Kallick originals. The lonely side of town is explored by Tommy Webb, Blue Highway, and IIIrd Tyme Out, and there’s a song cycle from “I’m Going Back To My Old Home Town” (Jake Landers) to “Heading Out From the Old Home Town” (Jack Tottle). The Osbornes had it right long ago: “Bluegrass Music’s Really Gone To Town.”
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Songs for Labor Day and hard working women and men–in the mines, on the farm, on stage and in the street. The Carter Family, Merle Travis, Grandpa Jones, the Memphis Jug Band, Jimmy Martin, Roosevelt Sykes and Bill Monroe all work overtime to keep from being Obsolete. As do we all!
*etown
The ever creative and entertaining troop Barenaked Ladies returns to etown to play songs from their new kids’ record ‘Snacktime.’ They will be joined by etown fave, stellar singer-songwriter Catie Curtis. Plus, our e-chievement award goes to an amazing 12-year old Canadian girl, Hannah Taylor, who has become a national advocate for the homeless. Come hear her inspiring story.

Music from Foggy Hollow
It’s traditional hard-driving bluegrass on Music from Foggy Hollow this week, as Mike Kear features a new CD from Big Country Bluegrass – a band famous for traditional-sounding straight bluegrass. The CD’s called “Open For Business” and Mike plays some songs from the CD and talks a bit about the band and its background. Also on the show this week, Cody Shuler and Pine Mountain Railroad, the Grascals, The Chapmans, Kate Lee, Bobby Osborne & Rocky Top Express and plenty more. It’s another show packed to the brim with banjo-lickin’ goodness, so don’t miss it!

Open Mic
This week we Open the Mic for two bands, bringing you the best of old-timey sounds. Our resident Old Time expert, Hubie King, visits with the New Southern Cowtippers and we’ll hear a concert performance from The Freight Hoppers recorded at the Stecoah Valley Center in North Carolina.
Old Time Jam
Hubie King was there to capture the Sounds of Clifftop as 3,000 musicians and fans attended the 2008 Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop West Virginia. Join the celebration of Old Time Music and hear about the concerts, contests and camping this week on Special Programming.
