*American Routes – Men of Steel and Soul
We’re bringing the blues from the clubs to the church this week on American Routes. The Campbell Brothers, from Rochester, NY, are masters of sacred steel. With both pedal and lap steel guitars, they summon the spirit in voice and sound. We’ll talk about growing up in the church and playing gospel blues on the guitar. Then, New Orleans bluesman Walter “Wolfman” Washington stops by the American Routes studio for a conversation about his life in the music and in the clubs around town.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Barry Scott & Second Wind Live (part 1)
He honed his craft playing bass and singing soaring vocals with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver for almost 10 years. He’s now at the helm of his own powerful, dynamic and trendsetting band. He writes uplifting songs and sings them with authority and panache. The ex-heartthrob of Bluegrass, Barry Scott & Second Wind will be pickin’ and singin’ ‘em live in the middle portion of our program. We’ll also be hearing newfangled items from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, David Grindstaff, Richard D. Henry, Don Rigsby & Midnight Call, and Nora Jane Struthers.

Bluegrass Review – #1133
We open with songs about rounders, those mean to everybody individuals whe are engaging in songs, but whom we would not like to meet in a dark alley. On the Gem of Bluegrass, we consider Upper Midwest hillbillies. Old time Scandinavian music in the Upper Midwest had characters resembling hillbillies, but were not called hillbillies. Later, we talk about bluegrass, old time music and the hillbilly stereotype. If you want to contact host Phil Nusbaum, the email address is pnusbaum@bitstream.net. Bluegrass Signal – #308 (1952 Releases, part 2) Rebroadcast
Many of the standards that are the foundation of bluegrass emerged in the music’s first significant decade, 1946-56. I thought it’d be interesting to pick one of those years, and have a listen to some of the songs released in, say, 1952. Last week: Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Reno & Smiley, Jim & Jesse, Pee Wee Lambert & Curley Parker, Jim Eanes, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. This week: The Osborne Brothers (but not together), Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. Mac Wiseman, Sauceman Brothers, Larry Richardson & Happy Smith, Betty Harper, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Wade Mainer. I’d live them times again.
