*American Routes – America’s Hippie Heritage
Tune in and turn on to our nation’s fringe heritage. Along with their spiritual forefathers, the beatniks and folkies, our hippie generation latched on to great music before them–from old-time country and bluegrass, bebop, blues and more–and created their own versions. We’re joined by Maria Muldaur who recalls making jug-band music in the West Village in the ’60s. Also, we speak with bass player Jack Casady, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Hammers & Nails, Part 1
They’re probably the world’s oldest tools, implements that have given rise to some of the world’s greatest edifices as well as many of Bluegrass-dom’s most gripping tunes—songs about powerful men, the building of the great railroads, the suffering of chain gangs and, of course, The Crucifixation. With the help of Blue Highway, Cumberland Gap Connection, Longview, Mac Wiseman, Jim Hurst and Doyle Lawson, we’ll be looking at hammers and nails.
Bluegrass Gospel USA! – Tues. 8 p.m. ET
Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #115

You’ll also hear first recordings by Kenny Baker and Bob Osborne, and some neat live recordings of banjo prodigy Joe Medford (1950), the Louvin Brothers (1955), Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper (1958), the Bray Brothers with John Hartford (1961), and the Kentucky Colonels (1965). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Review – #1131
We open with a postscript on the western music / bluegrass connection we investigated a few shows back. It seems that something appropriate always walks in the door right after it could have been used on the show. In this case, it’s a new CD of bluegrass-styled western songs by Michael Martin Murphey. We follow with an extended Gem of Bluegrass concerned with the history of an important old-time music banjo style, clawhammer banjo. Later, we consider the history of 3-finger banjo styles. If you want to contact host Phil Nusbaum, the email address is pnusbaum@bitstream.net. The playlist is located at www.bluegrassreview.com. Join the Bluegrass Review discussion on Facebook.
