*American Routes – Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals
Celebrate epic moments in American music from the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals–from Duke Ellington’s 1956 comeback to Bob Dylan’s 1965 electric revolution. Mark the 55th anniversary of the Jazz Festival with performances by Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, Louis Armstrong, and a visit from trumpet legend Clark Terry, who played with Ellington in ’56. Festival founder George Wein also joins us to share his memories, such as the founding of the Folk Festival in 1959 that featured blues, gospel, country, Cajun and more; and folk singer Joan Baez recalls her Newport experiences. Plus Newport performances from Doc Watson, John Lee Hooker and others.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Fives
It’s another chapter in our ongoing look at bluegrass numerology. This time it’s the number “five” that will be placed under the high-lonesome microscope. Del McCoury, the Bluegrass Brothers, Julie Kerr, Troublesome Hollow and Salamander Crossing will be singing about five days, five dollars, five rooms, five minutes, five flat rocks and, of course, the five string banjo.
Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #74
Treasures of the ‘60s are highlighted, including the music of Red Allen, Benny & Vallie Cain, the Charles River Valley Boys, the Country Gentlemen, Fats Domino, the Greenbriar Boys, Jimi Hendrix, the Kentucky Colonels, the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Sam & Kirk McGee, Jimmy Martin, Bill & James Monroe, Moore & Napier, the Osborne Brothers, Smokey Robinson, the Stanley Brothers, the Texas Troubadours, Doc Watson, and Mac Wiseman. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Review
After we open the show with a major production job by Alecia Nugent, we turn out attention to the fox chase. It’s a kind of instrumental piece that imitates the sounds of the hounds chasing the fox. On our Gem of Bluegrass, we look at pop and bluegrass from another viewpoint. Although the two forms are very different, pop is able to mine bluegrass from time to time. Later, we talk to Sam Bush, one of the defining mandolin players of his generation. Show host Phil Nusbaum enjoys talking to listeners. Contact him at pnusbaum@bitstream.net.
Bluegrass Signal – New Releases – Rebel
This week on Bluegrass Signal, three new releases on Rebel Records — from David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, Spring Creek, and Barry Scott & Second Wind — plus one reissue (Mac Wiseman from 1976-77) and a compilation that includes drivin’ and/or ramblin’ and/or rovin’ songs from Red Allen, Ralph Stanley, Larry Sparks, and Dave Evans.
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Extended visits with Bill Monroe, the Bailes Brothers, Sleepy John Estes and plugged-in Jim and Jesse occupy much of this week’s first hour. An informal ragtime survey precedes a kitty-cat song suite in hour 2. It’s August and days are warm, so the music’s not demanding, even though it remains steadfastly Obsolete.
*etown – Bruce Cockburn & Brett Dennen
Veteran singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn’s Etown appearances have always provided some of the show’s most cherished and memorable performances, and this week’s rebroadcast program, originally taped at the Flynn Theater in Burlington, Vermont, is no exception. Our second musical guest is engaging young singer-songwriter, Brett Dennen.

Music from Foggy Hollow
Mike Kear’s Music from Foggy Hollow this week features a new CD from Flatpicking Guitar Magazine called Flatpicking Bluegrass. It features a host of great guitarists playing lead on some standard bluegrass songs. He’s playing some of the songs and talking about the artists. Also on the show, Mike’s playing new music from David Peterson, will have a peek at the new Lou Reid & Carolina CD, and plays a great old song from Phil Rosenthal. As usual he doesn’t take things too seriously – there’s time for some fun and levity too. It’s another show oozing with bluegrass goodness, so don’t miss it!
