*American Routes – Riding the Rivers and Rails: Justin Townes Earle and Captain Doc Hawley
Have you ever sailed the Mississippi on a riverboat? Heard a calliope bounce notes off a barge? Caught the freight train boogie? This week on American Routes, we’re riding the rails and sailing sails with words and music dedicated to two old forms of transport. We’ll visit with Captain Doc Hawley, a calliope player on the “Natchez” in New Orleans to find out what it takes to make a boat sing. And a conversation with singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle, who knows a thing or two about trains. Plus music about rivers, railcars and riding around.
Bluegrass Breakdown – “Ken Irwin & Marian Leighton-Levy Live, Part 2″
They were three college students who had nothing but a vision and the ability to find great music. 41 years and 3,000 titles later—with projects covering the gamut from Ola Belle Reed to Robert Plant–their company remains one of the music industries’ greatest success stories. Two of the label’s three co-founders, Ken Irwin and Marian Leighton-Levy, will be joining us for part 2 of the Rounder Records story.

Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #114
Discover the missing link between bluegrass and rock ‘n roll in Buster Pack’s 1952 “Indian Boogie,” recorded for Rich-R-Tone two years before Elvis Presley’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” In the Dawn of the Bluegrass era segment, visit 1949 for Flatt & Scruggs’ Cincinnati sessions on Mercury, Mac Wiseman with the Blue Grass Boys, and Carl Story’s debut release — “My Lord Keeps a Record.” Other highlights include live tracks from Bill Keith & Jim Rooney (1963), Tex Logan at Newport (1965), Bill Monroe at Bean Blossom (1973), and Ron Thomason’s sales pitch for thought repellant hats (2005). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Review – #1130
Just a couple of shows back we were playing songs with western motifs. As soon as it was done, a new one walked in the door, by Michael Martin Murphy. We’ll play it and some other western numbers. They, Lyle Lofgren, Adam Granger and Phil Nusbaum turn their attention to bluegrass cliches, some of which have become standard parts of bluegrass. Later on the show, we’ll play some of the stylistic markings of well known players that did not enter the mainstream. If you want to contact host Phil Nusbaum, the email address is pnusbaum@bitstream.net. The playlist is located at www.bluegrassreview.com. Join the Bluegrass Review discussion on Facebook.
