*American Routes – Words to the Wise: Loretta Lynn, Bill Kirchen & Les Freres Michot
This week on American Routes we’re sharing some words of wisdom. Loretta Lynn blazed a trail through the male-dominated world of country music, bringing her experience as a mother and wife to songwriting and challenging stereotypes along the way. We’ll hear about her journey from the hills of Butcher Hollow to the studios of Music City. Rockabilly guitarist and singer Bill Kirchen might be best known for his time in Commander Cody’s band, and his hot licks on “Hot Rod Lincoln,” but we’ll learn more about the man called the “Titan of the Telecaster,” who won’t be pegged by genres. Then we’ll stop for a few environmentally sound Cajun tunes and visit with a band of brothers, Les Freres Michot.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Marking Time, Part 2
We’ll continue deciphering the curious way BluegrassLanders mark time. As the years roll by, there are certain times when one feels compelled to either look back … or forward … and ruminate about what’s happened, what could have been or what might be. These spasms of contemplation usually occur on auspicious occasions such as 20, 30, 40 or 50 years after or before the event in question. We’ll be remembering such events with the help of the Gibson Brothers, James King, David Parmley, Randy Kohrs and Hot Rize.
Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #89
This week, hear the original New Orleans jazz arrangement of “Farewell Blues” (1922), together with an amazing solo guitar version that Clarence White taped for Tut Taylor (1965). You’ll also hear some of the lesser-known women pioneers in bluegrass (Margie Sullivan, 1960; Rubye Davis, 1976; Dede Wyland, 1978), the Country Gentlemen singing “Fox On the Run” at their Stuart, VA festival (1978), and how Bill and Charlie Monroe performed “scared to death” with burlesque dancers in Chicago (1933). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
Bluegrass Review
We’re in a new bluegrass frame of mine as we open up with a selection by Summertime Road. Early in the show, we also premiere new bluegrass by North Carolina group, Nu-Blu. Our Gem of Bluegrass documents a growing trend: new time music. It’s based on old-time, but happily admits diverse styles into its list of influences. Later in the show, we talk to Cadillac Sky. Cadillac Sky is a progressive acoustic band that reminds of a 1970-era rock band, but on the bluegrass instruments. Before we’re done today, we hit a happy-sounding sad song and a bluegrass song with a great hook. The playlist is located at www.bluegrassreview.com. Join the Bluegrass Review discussion on Facebook. Bluegrass Signal – Back To the Old Home Place
A celebration of the 35th anniversary of the 1975 Memorial Bluegrass Festival, presented by Ralph Stanley at his old homeplace in western Virginia. A recording of this festival — “Live at McClure” — provides all the show’s music, with selections by Reno & Harrell, the Marshall Family, Goins Brothers, Larry Sparks, and, of course, Dr. Ralph & the Clinch Mt. Boys (with Keith Whitley, Curly Ray Cline, Jack Cooke, and Rickie Lee) — with Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, and Leslie Keith sitting in. (Although not all at the same time.)
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Canine carols by Blind Blake and Grandpa Jones, cowboy songs from the great Southeast (and Texas too), the story of Pine Top’s Boogie Woogie, and some serious old time songs from Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs and a calypso master who tops even Ricky! In the second hour, some top notch 1960s Newgrass (well, it was then!) from southern Illinois. Not a bad show, even if it is Obsolete!
*etown – Matt Costa and Eliza Gilkyson
eTown welcomes back Grammy nominee and Austin Music Hall of Fame inductee Eliza Gilkyson. Always an eTown favorite, Eliza shares her exquisite and intimate songs, backed up by hosts Nick & Helen Forster and the eTones. Plus eTown newcomer and up and coming rising star Matt Costa and his band are with us in this repeat broadcast, playing a set of music featuring sweet melodies and thoughtful lyrics.
