*American Routes – How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away? Dan Hicks and Commander Cody
Join American Routes for two hours of wry humor, outlandish puns and gonzo attitude when we sit down with two high-flying musicians: Dan Hicks and Commander Cody. Mr. Hicks spins tales of sartorial genius and fine times in the ’60s as a ragtime-country-cowboy-jazz musician in San Francisco. And direct from the Adirondacks, we’ll spend time with the artist and bandleader Commander Cody to hear about his musical travels and travails with the Lost Planet Airmen, across the country and through space with stops in Texas, of course.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Chris Stuart & Backcountry Live
They’ll be roaring in from the west with some of the toughest-edged, grittiest and meatiest songs in the known high lonesome universe. Nobody tells a story or has won more songwriting awards than Chris Stuart. Chris Stuart & Backcountry—Eric Uglum on guitar, Janet Beazley on the banjo, Christian Ward on the fiddle, Austin Ward on the bass and Chris Stuart on guitar—will be congregating around the microphones live.
Bluegrass Master Class – Banks of the Ohio #88
Celebrate the beauty of human expression this week with the Isaacs’ a cappella “Blessed Assurance,” Bill Monroe & Kenny Baker’s “Jerusalem Ridge,” the Seldom Scene’s “With Body and Soul,” and an eloquent paragraph from a Chinese student at Nankai University, reflecting on his first exposure to bluegrass. You’ll also hear the records given to Fred Bartenstein by his father, aunt, and minister that started Fred’s lifelong bluegrass journey. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum.
Bluegrass Review
After opening with some hard stuff by Audie Blaylock and Red Line, we play a generation old treatment of the life of Hank Williams by a since departed group known as Bottle Hill. On the Gem of Bluegrass, we investigate the connection between 19th century – derived sentimental songs and more recent bluegrass nostalgia songs. Later, we go Out in the Country, way up north to Duluth, MN, where we meet Ted Heinonen. Ted is an accomplished bluegrass player, and also an avid player of the Swedish nychelharpa.
