Bluegrass Review – #1142
We lead off with a couple of recent “coal” songs. Then, our Gem of Bluegrass focuses on a subtle change in bluegrass band approaches over the last generation: the more emphatic rhythm sections. In the second half of the show, the centerpiece is a conversation with The Bankesters, the family band from Illinois tell us about using a recording project to discover their identity as a band.
We’re asking listeners to suggest Bluegrass to be Thankful for to be aired about Thanksgiving. This is the bluegrass that really moves listeners. To tell us which songs you are thankful for, and why, use the contact link at www.bluegrassreview.com or on Facebook. If you want to contact host Phil Nusbaum, the email address is pnusbaum@bitstream.net. The playlist is located at www.bluegrassreview.com.
Bluegrass Signal – #261 (In Memory Of Wilma Lee Cooper; rebroadcast)
Originally broadcast on Wilma Lee Cooper’s birthday in 2009, this week’s Bluegrass Signal presents an overview of her music in memorial tribute. Wilma Lee and her longtime singing partner (and husband), Stoney Cooper might not have been strictly bluegrass, but Wilma Lee was a powerful singer and a trailblazer in the music; their band, the Clinch Mountain Clan, was among the first to include a dobro; their recordings of “I Cried Again” and “Sunny Side Of the Mountain” were among the first in bluegrass; and they even released “Wicked Path Of Sin” before Bill Monroe. The show also includes two celebrations of their native West Virginia.
