Bluegrass Review – #1136
The program opens with recent bluegrass, including a brand new recording by April Verch, the Canadian fiddling virtuoso. With fall approaching, the Gem of Bluegrass reflects that we’re re-grounding ourselves in bluegrass. It is called “Here’s a Toast to Bluegrass.” Before the break, we slip in some songs that contain vivid depictions of poverty, but these are woven into songs where some other topic is the main interest. Later, we talk to Larry Hanks and Deb Robins who sing an play old time songs related to labor issues. Towards the end of the show we play a western song we wish we’d had time for during a show that Adam Granger and Lyle Lofgren helped with, “Wah Hoo” by Bill Boy’s Cowboy Ramblers. The song is a masterpiece of musical choreography done before multi-tracking. We’d love to hear your comments on Facebook. *etown – Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks / Vienna Teng (featuring Alex Wong)
We welcome guitarist and songwriter Dan Hicks to eTown this week. No one else sounds like him. His eclectic style and counter-culture appeal, driven by sharp-tongued and dry-witted lyrics, has twice landed him on the cover of Rolling Stone. “Dan Hicks is fly, sly, wily and dry!” says Tom Waits. And of course Dan brings his great back up singers, The Hot Licks. Also with us for this encore airing is talented pianist and singer-songwriter Vienna Teng. She’s a Stanford computer science grad and software engineer whose career took a sharp turn several years ago, when she ditched that world to pursue her musical passions. Her “engaging voice, insightful lyrics and reflective piano-driven chamber folk packs quite the punch…simmers and soars.” (LA Weekly). All this, plus an inspiring E-Chievement Award interview, this week, in eTown.
