*American Routes – George Jones & Sam Moore
This week we are visited by two men with legendary voices, in country and soul, famous for their duets and more. From the cotton patches of East Texas, George Jones remains one of the most distinctive voices in country music or otherwise. Known as “The King of Broken Hearts,” his hits through the ’60s and ’70s remain the high water mark for country ballads. Sam Moore, formerly of Sam & Dave, recalls his early days as a gospel singer in Miami and his conversion to pop. As a ’60s “Soul Man” he recorded a string of jukebox classics then pressed through difficult times and has emerged with a second career on his own.
Banks of the Ohio
Bluegrass sources this week include the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, the Louvin Brothers, and the Everly Brothers. Music from 2003 is featured in the fifth half hour. Other highlights include live tracks from the Grand Ole Opry (1959), the Smithsonian Institution (1974), Telluride (1994), Merlefest (2003), and the European World of Bluegrass (2003). A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Grandfather’s Clock
With the help of Larry Sparks, Gail Davies, Peter Rowan, Ralph Stanley & the Acousticats, we’ll be turning back the clock, cursing the time clock, admiring our gold watch, keeping time on Grandfather’s clock and enjoying some round the clock lovin’ … on an unusually precise edition of Bluegrass Breakdown.
Bluegrass Review
Today’s Gem of Bluegrass focuses on mandolin genius Frank Wakefield. In his career he has performed with traditional masters such as Red Allen, and also composes modernistic mandolin music. Also on the show we talk with a young family group, the Lovell Sisters. The group tells about how these classically trained kids turned into bluegrass players. Also, the Lovells play for our microphone. We play recent bluegrass from CDs and say our last goodbyes to summer 2008. By the way, Bluegrass Review host Phil Nusbaum enjoys invites your correspondence at pnusbaum@bitstream.net. Check BluegrassReview.com for playlists, a link to culture11, where bluegrass people discuss bluegrass, links to Bluegrass Review supporters and occasional special offers.
Bluegrass Signal - That Was Now, This Is Then
An overview of the music of Frank Wakefield, about whom David Grisman, Frank’s most famous student, said: “He was the first mandolin player to transform the bluegrass energy of Bill Monroe into something new. He split the bluegrass mandolin atom.” Hear lots of Frank’s music with Red Allen in 1963-64, of course, but also some funky 1957 recordings (with Marvin Cobb, Buster Turner, and Jimmy Martin), a few of the 1975-80 NorCal sessions (with The Good Old Boys as well as his band that included Keith Little, Kathy Kallick, and Darol Anger), and some more recent instrumental workouts.
*The Dick Spottswood Show
Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, the Lilly Brothers and Merle Travis from 1950s-60s stage and radio performances in Boston, Mississippi blues guitar from Bo Carter, and the unrelated (except to each other) Carter Family of Poor Valley, Virginia make some good Obsolete Music in Hour One. They’re followed by a Sun Records medley, some superior bluegrass and a capella shape note singing in Hour Two.
*etown
Legendary bluesman Taj Mahal makes his way back to Etown this week. Taj is celebrating his 40th year of performing, and we are treated to an exciting set from him and band mates Bill Rich and Kester Smith. Then Martha Wainwright (talented daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle) makes her first Etown appearance. The Etones, featuring Nick & Helen Forster, provide instrumental and vocal backup for her. Plus, Nick engages energy industry expert and attorney Mike Beatty in a conversation about our nation’s energy needs. And this week’s E-Chievement Award goes to a man from Virginia who is helping to build and sustain communities in need here and overseas.

Also on the show, Ernie Thacker makes a welcome return to the airwaves after a horror couple of years since his car crash. Plus music from Gena Britt Tew, Janet McGarry, the Pheasant Pluckers, Beth Stevens & Edge, new bluegrass from Italian band Red Wine and much much more. As always it’s a packed show, so dont miss it!
