*American Routes – Nashville
Take a two-hour trip to Music City, U.S.A. as we hit the high-class and the low-class joints. Nashville has been a hub of playing and recording country music for over 50 years while also generating a steady stream regional R & B hits. Come backstage at the Grand Ole Opry and meet the people who make it work, from ushers and announcers to long-time cast members Porter Wagoner, Marty Stuart and others. Pop into the venerable Gruhn’s Guitars, grab a bite at the Pancake Pantry and pay respects at country music’s finest final resting place, Spring Hill Cemetery.
Banks of the Ohio
Highlights this week include a Missy Raines/Tom Gray bass duet, a three-song tribute to new Hall of Famer Howard Watts, Buzz Busby playing electric rockabilly, the composer’s performance of “Maple Sugar” (the “Orange Blossom Special” of Canada), the pre-teen Wilson Brothers & Larry at Fincastle ’66, Ralph Stanley & teen Fred Bartenstein at Camp Springs ’69, the Dillards at Warrenton ’73, Sweden’s G2 Bluegrass Band (top band in Europe 2007), and two prior all-Europe winners. There’s also a half-hour feature on bluegrass from 1994. A production of the International Bluegrass Music Museum, hosted by Fred Bartenstein.
Bluegrass Breakdown – Preaching Up A Storm
We’ll be looking at one of the most respected figures in all of BluegrassLand. He’s country, old-fashioned, simple, often a “traveling man” and sometimes even packs a pistol. Words are his stock in trade and he’ll utter them from the pulpit, by the side of the road, on streets–wherever the opportunity may arise. He’s the Mountain Preacher and, with the help of such luminaries as Ralph Stanley, Patent Pending, Rarely Herd and Southern Exposure, he’ll be preaching up a storm.
Bluegrass Review with Phil Nusbaum
Bluegrass Signal with Peter Thompson
The survey of new releases on this week’s Bluegrass Signal includes music from forthcoming releases by Dry Branch Fire Squad, The Grascals, James King, and The Steeldrivers; musical previews of Wil Maring’s NorCal shows; the blues according to Red Wine, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, and Grasstowne; new recordings of old faves by Claire Lynch; and a selection from some of the hotter younger bands, including King Wilkie, Steep Canyon Rangers, and (once again) The Steeldrivers.
The Dick Spsottswood Show
Look at all those Bear Family tracks in the 1st hour. No, I’m not shilling for them, but the Bears have reproduced more than their share of great Obsolete Music. This week’s second hour is split between railroad songs and hard times anthems, with the latter dedicated to everyone holding adjustable rate mortgages.
*etown with Nick Forster
For this encore broadcast, etown welcomes back jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. Stereophile magazine describes him as “the most brilliant and unique voice to come along in jazz guitar since Wes Montgomery.” He’s joined by his extraordinary band, featuring Ron Miles on trumpet. Also appearing is Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem with a set of Americana music featuring great vocals and sparkling original songs. And there’s another inspired and inspiring e-chievement award winner.

Music from Foggy Hollow
This week Mike Kear features two terrific young musicians still in their teens, but playing music like they’ve been in the bluegrass business for decades. Cory and Jarrod Walker have just released their third CD, called “New Branches” and they’re still only 16 and 14 years old! Also on the show, some new Australian music, a segment from Sao Paulo in Brazil, and a new sgment – a look back at what Mike was playing on the show 5 years ago. It’s another big show this week, so don’t miss it!

Old Time Jam
Hubie King takes us back to the Civil War and plays some of the music of that tragic time in American history. Hear the true story of a lost love which inspired a preacher to write the words of the song that many believed caused the Confederates to desert and head home, and the story of the man who wrote the music, and what other famous songs he composed. Then, Hubie takes us westward to Illinois, where we’ll sample the tunes collected out that way and played by native mid-westerners like the Indian Creek Delta Boys, the Volo Bogtrotters, Garry Harrison and “Chirps” Smith.
