Jen Hitt reports from the road to Wilkesboro, North Carolina and takes in the first day of MerleFest 2010…
April 30, 2010
Thursday morning we spent the morning playing songs with Brandi from the Dixie Bee-Liners in Abingdon, Virginia.
Brandi hooked up with the the info on taking the back route to Wilkesboro, on the Crooked Road…
As we got closer to Wilkesboro, we were able to tune in some of the local stations and could only guess at the artists (for your reference, Justin Bieber)
We finally got to check in and grabbed a quick look at the program guide…
The WAMU’s Bluegrass Country announcement is across the page from Washington DC favorites, the band Scythian… how fitting!
My first set on the Watson stage (after we set up the BGC table) was The Duhks from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
I wonder if they are getting a new fiddler?? Casey Driessen filled in for Tania Elizabeth.
Sarah Dugas broke into an amazing cover of Led Zepplin’s Gonna Give You My Love to finish out the set.
Reigning Martha White Prom Queen, Rhonda Vincent played a set on Thursday. Her voice was a little tired though, she was still recovering from bronchitis!
Katy Daley has taught me the importance of saying hello to the Gibson Brothers whenever you get the chance! So I made sure to snap a photo with bass player, Mike Barber.
And of course we stopped by the annual sand sculpture by Sandy Feet to mark the progress.
Friday will be a full day!!
Check out the rest of the photos.
Cheers,
Jen
