The tune was written and sung by WAMU’s very own Matt McCleskey, the multi-talented local host of Morning Edition. Matt started playing guitar as a teenager growing up in North Carolina. Through college there and during his twenties living in San Francisco, Matt played in dive bars and other venues – mostly rock with country and blues. He has also always enjoyed songwriting, ranging from individual songs to theatrical soundtracks.
While in recent years his public performances have become rare, he continues to play music (mostly for his 2-year-old son) and write and record songs for fun.
During the last Bluegrass Country on-air fundraising campaign, he started playing around with a “pledge song” idea mostly as a joke. But after singing the refrain to Katy Daley, she immediately started thinking about who could come in to play instruments and sing on a recorded version.
So Matt wrote a few verses, Katy invited Rockledge and other fine musicians to take part in a recording session, and the final product is what you hear here.
Matt hopes you enjoy it, and hopes it encourages you to lend your support to Bluegrass Country!
