What would New Year’s be without a countdown of the most popular songs of the year? Host Lee Michael Demsey has compiled his list of the Top 40 Bluegrass Songs of 2008, which will air New Year’s Eve 10pm – Midnight (ET) and New Year’s Day 10a-Noon (ET).
No hints on what’s the most popular song of the year, but if you follow Bluegrass Unlimited charts, which Lee has been compiling since April 1990, you might have an idea of how the list will shake out.
Here’s what Lee has to say on how he compiled the list: “This chart is not officially sanctioned by BU as being “official.” Songs that first charted in January 2008 and spent the whole year on the chart would have had an unfair advantage over songs that first charted the previous October and had a shorter run on the chart during the calender year of 2008. For that reason, if a song spent at least five months on the chart in 2008, I gave it credit for it’s points for it’s entire run, including late 2007. For songs that spent at least five months on the chart at the end of 2008, I extrapolated how the rest of their chart run might actually go, so as not to give them short shrift. So it’s not an official chart, just an approximation.”
If you miss the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day shows, you can catch it later in the week during Open Mic.
