January 2004: Kane’s River

Bozeman, Montana isn’t well-known as a home for bluegrass - but then, Kane’s River isn’t a typical bluegrass band. Though its members have no problem finding their way around the bluegrass classics, Kane’s River’s strength lies in the diversity of the individual members and the way their original music is shaped by the big sky and wide, open spaces of the western landscape, where they live.

Founded by John Lowell and David Thompson in 1994, the band released a well-received CD, The Cottonwood, in 1997. Kicking their efforts into high gear and changing the name to Kane’s River, the band then added Julie Elkins and Jason Thomas to release a critically-acclaimed recording entitled Kane’s River in October 2000.

With Kane’s River, the band captured the attention of the entire bluegrass world and gained a reputation for trailblazing a new, refreshing approach to bluegrass and acoustic music. While remaining near the pinnacle of the Bluegrass National Charts for several months, Kane’s River catapulted the band to the national level and added Ben Winship on mandolin in 2002.

The band will released their long-awaited second release, Same River Twice, in July of 2003 to great anticipation and promise of an even higher level of success in the future. With three dynamic lead vocalists and outstanding harmonies, all members of Kane’s River are also gifted instrumentalists, songwriters of the highest caliber and together, display a unique and lively stage presence that has resulted in them becoming one of the industry‘s most highly sought-after bands to perform at some of the acoustic music world‘s most prestigious events and venues. Weaving a tapestry of exemplary skill, soul and creativity, this is one group with the perfect combination to touch audiences of every kind, as their live performances and chart-topping recordings have shown.
