Bluegrass Master Class
March 15, 2009
Rebroadcast On: 03/22/2009
This week Fred Bartenstein explores some New England connections in the history of bluegrass. Sacred Harp singing (“Lover of the Lord”) began there. Hal “Lone Pine” Breau of Pea Cove, MA, was the source of Mac Wiseman’s “Goodbye and So Long To You.” The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover do “Good Old Mountain Dew” on WCOP, Boston, in 1952. Massachusetts-born Bill Keith plays “Nola” at Newport, RI, in 1964. Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys sing “Some Broken Hearts Never Mend.” Dan Tyminski, from Vermont, performs “I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair.” There are six cuts from Rounder Records (Cambridge, MA) and a request for a listener down east in Portland, ME.
