BLUEGRASS SIGNAL: In Memory Of Wilma Lee Cooper
Originally broadcast on Wilma Lee Cooper’s birthday in 2009, this week’s Bluegrass Signal presents an overview of her music in memorial tribute. Wilma Lee and her longtime singing partner (and husband), Stoney Cooper might not have been strictly bluegrass, but Wilma Lee was a powerful singer and a trailblazer in the music; their band, the Clinch Mountain Clan, was among the first to include a dobro; their recordings of “I Cried Again” and “Sunny Side Of the Mountain” were among the first in bluegrass; and they even released “Wicked Path Of Sin” before Bill Monroe. The show also includes two celebrations of their native West Virginia.
