Winifred Horan has resumed a busy musical touring career which doesn’t leave time to produce a weekly radio show.  Bluegrass Country is pleased to introduce the new host of The Celtic Cut, Oliver Sweeney.

From the moment his mother bought him an accordion at the age of 10, it is safe to say that Oliver Sweeney was hooked on music, mainly of the Irish variety, though the popular music of his youth also had a huge influence.  As he exited his teens and headed to college in Dublin, he became immersed in the folk music scene, forming the trad. band Rakish Paddy with fellow musos Martin Denning on guitar and vocals, Ed Mullarkey on guitar and piano, and Muireann Conway on lead vocals.  After five decades apart, the band reunited in 2023, and plan a few small concert series in 2024.

Oliver joined Hot Press on its inception in 1977, and wrote for the magazine until 2014.  He has also written for other publications such as Frets, Fatea and Folk Roots. He has worked in Irish radio with Raidio na Life, a Dublin based Irish language station, Anna Livia, and Radio Ireland, a popular Dublin based internet outfit.  As a record producer, he has collaborated with artists such as Julia Clifford, Eamon O’Tuama, Orla, and Galloping Green, and he was co-owner of a small Irish independent label later back in the mists of time.
